Public engagement describes the process whereby academics, scientists and other researchers communicate their research to members of the public. The process allows the local community to understand what research is being undertaken at their local university or hospital, and helps them to understand why research is important. Public engagement also helps raise the profile of the University. From 2017, ASSAM has been pioneering the concept that medical students should be involved in public engagement for research. You can read about last years inaugural event in this issue of the Press and Journal.
This is our showcase public engagement event. Below was the program for our 2018 event. The event included a series of short talks, ‘poster presentations’ and a chance to mingle with our top medical and dental student researchers. This event was ideal for absolutely everyone – members of the public (young, old and everyone in-between), secondary school pupils, university students, patients and professionals alike. Everyone was made to feel welcome and absolutely no prior knowledge was needed! More information and photographs from the event can be found here for 2018 and here for 2017.
